Egypt will return to football’s biggest stage in 2026 carrying both history and ambition as they prepare for their fourth appearance at the FIFA World Cup.

After missing the 2022 tournament in Qatar, the Pharaohs have secured another opportunity to compete among the world’s elite and will arrive in North America determined to achieve something they have never managed before – winning a match at the World Cup.

Placed in Group G alongside Belgium, Iran and New Zealand, Egypt face a challenging route in the expanded competition, but hopes remain high that a squad led by Mohamed Salah can finally break new ground.

The tournament, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico from 11 June to 19 July, offers Egypt another chance to improve on a World Cup record that has so far been marked by frustration despite several memorable moments.

For Egyptian football, qualification alone represents another significant achievement.

The national team remains one of Africa’s most successful sides at continental level, yet success on the global stage has often proved more elusive.

Egypt’s relationship with the World Cup stretches back almost a century.

The Pharaohs became the first African and Arab nation to participate in the tournament when they appeared at the 1934 edition in Italy.

That appearance marked a historic moment not only for Egyptian football but also for African football as a whole.

However, Egypt would then endure a lengthy absence from the competition.

The national team did not return to the World Cup until 1990, when they qualified for the tournament in Italy.

Another long wait followed before Egypt secured a place at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

As a result, the 2026 tournament will represent only the fourth World Cup appearance in the country’s history.

Despite their proud footballing tradition, the Pharaohs are still searching for a first victory at the finals.

Across their previous three appearances, Egypt have played seven matches, recording two draws and five defeats.

They have scored five goals and conceded 12.

Their best World Cup result remains a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands during the 1990 tournament.

That record provides additional motivation for a generation eager to establish its own place in Egyptian football history.

The road to qualification suggested that Egypt possess the consistency required to compete at the highest level.

Under head coach Hossam Hassan, the Pharaohs dominated Group A of the African qualifying campaign.

They completed the qualifiers unbeaten, recording eight victories and two draws.

The impressive campaign secured their place at the finals and reinforced confidence within the squad ahead of the tournament.

Egypt’s hopes will once again be heavily linked to captain Mohamed Salah.

The Liverpool forward remains the team’s most recognisable figure and one of the leading players in African football.

Alongside Salah, Egypt also possess experienced players such as Omar Marmoush, Mahmoud Trezeguet and Emam Ashour.

The squad combines established international performers with emerging talent as the coaching staff seeks the right balance for the tournament.

Goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy is expected to provide leadership and experience at the back, while defenders including Mohamed Abdelmonem, Ahmed Fattouh and Mohamed Hany will be tasked with providing stability against strong opposition.

In midfield, players such as Marwan Attia, Mohanad Lasheen and Ahmed Sayed Zizo are expected to play important roles in controlling matches and linking defence with attack.

The forward line will naturally attract much of the attention, particularly with Salah and Marmoush carrying significant expectations.

Egypt’s World Cup journey begins with what could be their most difficult group-stage assignment.

The Pharaohs will face Belgium on 15 June at Seattle Stadium in a match that could have a major influence on the outcome of Group G.

Their second fixture comes against New Zealand on 22 June at BC Place in Vancouver.

The group stage concludes on 27 June when Egypt meet Iran at Seattle Stadium.

Those three matches will determine whether the Pharaohs can finally progress beyond the first round for the first time in their history.

For Egypt, the 2026 World Cup represents more than just another appearance.

It is an opportunity to build on their rich football heritage, challenge a difficult historical record and prove that this generation is capable of achieving something no Egyptian team has managed before.

With Salah leading the way and an unbeaten qualifying campaign behind them, the Pharaohs will travel to North America believing that their long-awaited breakthrough may finally be within reach.
