Egypt U18 women thrash Benin to make it two wins at AfroBasket

Egypt’s women’s under-18 basketball team made it two victories from two matches at the AfroBasket after beating Benin 95-47 in Abidjan.

The result came in the group stage of the tournament, which is being held in the Ivorian capital. Egypt produced a dominant display throughout the game, controlling the contest and securing a convincing 48-point victory.

Egypt showed determination and concentration from the opening moments, combining an effective attacking performance with strong defensive work. Their advantage continued to grow as the match progressed, leaving Benin unable to mount a serious challenge.

The win strengthens Egypt’s position in Group B, where they are competing alongside Mali, Morocco and Benin. The group phase is being played in a single round-robin format, with the leading teams progressing to the quarter-finals in accordance with the tournament regulations.

Egypt began their campaign with a victory and followed it with another emphatic performance against Benin. The team now hopes to carry that momentum into the remainder of the group stage as they target qualification for the last eight and a strong challenge for the African title.

The Egyptian under-18 side secured its place at the AfroBasket finals after winning the Zone 5 qualifying tournament. That competition was held at Cairo International Stadium.

The 12-player squad is made up of Gory Nizar, Malak El Azab, Sidra Shalaby, Hania Nasser, Yasmine El Gamal, Fatma Mohamed, Mariam Hazem, Malak El Hamly, Hana El Baz, Layla Hossam, Zeina Halim and Sidra Haitham.

The team is coached by Tarek Khairy, while Ayman Ali, a member of the Egyptian Basketball Federation’s board, is leading the delegation for both the women’s and men’s under-18 teams in Abidjan.

Egypt’s objective is to maintain its winning run and continue producing strong performances in the remaining group matches. Progress to the quarter-finals would provide the side with the opportunity to compete for honours at the continental tournament.

The AfroBasket is currently taking place in Abidjan, with Egypt’s latest match played on Saturday, 8 August 2026. Their 95-47 success over Benin was their second appearance of the competition and delivered the largest winning margin of their campaign so far.
