Egyptian international Mohammed Salah has paid tribute to his late Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota, in a touching message, expressing his grief over the loss of the Portuguese international.
Jota, 28, and his younger brother Andre Silva, 25, tragically died in the early hours of Thursday while returning to the United Kingdom from Spanish, Zamora.
The incident is believed to have been the result of a tyre blowout as the car overtook another vehicle. Jota, who married his long-time partner Rute Cardosa 11 days before the crash, had been advised to avoid flying after recently undergoing surgery.
Tributes have been pouring in from the football world and fans, with Salah being the latest player to pay an emotional tribute.
In the most solemn and unexpected of homecomings, the bodies of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva were brought back to Porto last night. Their hearses were greeted with applause.
“I truly have no words. Until yesterday, I never thought anything could make me fear returning to Liverpool after a break. Teams change, but not in this way. Accepting that Diogo won’t be with us when we return will be incredibly tough. My thoughts are with his wife, children, and of course his parents, who suddenly lost their son. Everyone close to Diogo and his brother André needs all the support they can get. They will never be forgotten,” Salah wrote.
Salah had to cut his vacation in Greece short following the passing of Jota. The enterprising winger has returned to England.
