Egyptian defender Mohamed Hamdi will fly to Germany on Sunday evening to undergo surgery following an injury setback at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Hamdi, 30, succumbed to a torn cruciate ligament injury in the last 16 clash against Benin last Monday, ruling him out of the tournament.
The Egyptian Football Association in consultation with Pyramids FC have decided to fly out Hamdi to Germany for a surgery.
The left-back decided to stay in Agadir to support his teammates in the Ivory Coast match before traveling to Germany, with the Pharaohs cruising to a 3-2 victory to secure a place in the semifinals of the tournament.
However, Ibrahim Hassan, the Team Manager of Egypt, has confirmed Hamdi will leave camp on Sunday evening to undergo the surgery in Germany.
“Mohamed Hamdi will leave Morocco at 6 pm today, Sunday, Egypt time, after the Football Association completed the player’s travel procedures to Germany.”
He continued, “Mohamed Hamdi will undergo surgery after suffering a torn cruciate ligament in his knee on January 15, following coordination between the medical staff of the Egyptian national team and their counterparts at Pyramids FC.”
The match between Egypt and Senegal is a repeat of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations final in Cameroon, where the Taranga Lions triumphed over the Pharaohs to clinch their first AFCON title.
Egypt last won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2010, defeating Ghana 1-0 to annex their seventh title on the continent.
