Edouard Mendy becomes master of continental finals across three continents
Senegalese goalkeeper Edouard Mendy continues to dominate continental finals, having led Al Ahli Jeddah to their second consecutive AFC Champions League Elite title with a 1-0 extra-time victory over Japan’s Machida Zelvia.
The triumph extends his remarkable record in continental showpiece matches across Europe, Africa, and Asia.
Mendy has now competed in six continental finals throughout his career, appearing twice with Chelsea, twice with Senegal’s national team, and twice with Al Ahli. Remarkably, the 34-year-old has kept clean sheets in five of those six matches, conceding just a single goal across all finals.
His European success began with Chelsea’s 2020-2021 Champions League triumph over Manchester City, followed by the 2021 UEFA Super Cup against Villarreal, which ended 1-1 before Chelsea prevailed on penalties. That Super Cup final remains the only time Mendy conceded in a continental final.
With Senegal, he featured in two AFCON finals against Egypt in 2021 and Morocco in 2025, both ending goalless before penalty shootouts. Although Senegal initially won the 2025 edition, CAF later awarded the title to Morocco following an appeal decision in March.
In Asia, Mendy secured back-to-back AFC Champions League Elite titles with Al Ahli, defeating Kawasaki Frontale last season and Machida Zelvia in the current campaign, maintaining clean sheets in both finals.
