Authorities in DR Congo issue alert on fraudulent World Cup offers
The government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has issued a warning to the public over potential scams linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stressing that no official arrangements have been made for supporters to travel to the tournament.
In a statement released late last week, the Ministry of Sports clarified that it has not authorised any individual or organisation to coordinate travel, sell packages or collect funds related to fan participation.
The announcement comes amid growing excitement following the national team’s qualification for the global competition.
“The Ministry of Sports and Recreation informs the public that, as part of the support provided to the Leopards for the 2026 World Cup, no sales, fundraising, or payment for fan participation is authorized.
The Ministry firmly reiterates that no individual or organization is mandated to organize or sell trips. No fees are required to support the Leopards,” the Ministry of Sports wrote.
Officials say the warning is necessary to protect supporters from fraudulent schemes, as heightened interest in the tournament has created opportunities for malicious actors to exploit fans.
The government emphasised that it has not initiated any official programme linked to supporter travel or financial contributions.
The 2026 tournament will be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico, with logistics and travel costs already a subject of concern for many supporters, particularly across Africa.
Despite these challenges, the Leopards’ return to the World Cup after more than five decades has generated widespread enthusiasm.
Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious and verify any information through official channels before making financial commitments.
“Anyone claiming to represent the Ministry and soliciting money is acting fraudulently.
The public is urged not to pay any money, to verify information through official channels, and to report any suspicious activity.”
The Leopards have been drawn in Group K, where they are set to face Portugal national team, led by Cristiano Ronaldo, alongside Uzbekistan national team and Colombia national team.
