DR Congo U23 Team in Maurice Revello Tournament Opener

The DR Congo Under-23 national team began their Maurice Revello Tournament campaign with a 3-0 defeat against Tunisia, leaving the young Leopards with a difficult start to the competition in France.

The result reflects a challenging opening match for a squad competing in the tournament for only the second time in its history at this age level. Tunisia controlled the contest and capitalised on a Congolese side still finding its structure and rhythm.

This heavy defeat was partly attributed to limited preparation time for the squad. The team selection was finalised late, with several players only joining the group after completing their domestic league commitments.

As a result, the coaching staff had minimal time to work on tactical cohesion ahead of the tournament.

The lack of preparation was evident in the performance, with the team struggling to impose itself against a well-organised Tunisian side.

Despite the setback, the staff will be encouraged to use the remaining group fixtures as an opportunity to stabilise performances and correct early weaknesses.

Attention now turns to recovery and preparation for the next match, where the Congolese side will be hoping to respond more effectively and avoid another heavy defeat as the tournament progresses.

The Maurice Revello Tournament holds particular significance for DR Congo at youth level, marking only their second participation in the competition. Their previous appearance came in 2013 with a generation that featured several players who would go on to establish international careers.

That earlier squad included names such as Chancel Mbemba, Marcel Tisserand, Omenuke Mfulu, Clark Nsikulu, Riffi Mandanda, Hervé Ndonga, Firmin Mubele, and Merveille Bope, among others. At the time, the competition was contested at Under-21 level before later transitioning to an Under-23 format.

For the current group, the focus will now be on gaining experience and building cohesion as they continue their development on the international stage, despite the difficult opening result against Tunisia.
