DR Congo midfielder Merveille Biankadi exits Energie Cottbus after difficult decision
Energie Cottbus have confirmed the departure of DR Congo midfielder Merveille Biankadi after the club’s promotion to the German second division, bringing an end to his one-season spell with the team.
The decision was widely expected due to several factors, including the player’s age and the agreement that was originally signed for only one campaign. Biankadi, who is now 31, will leave the club after helping them during their successful promotion season.
Energie Cottbus head coach Claus-Dieter Wollitz admitted that letting the attacking midfielder go was a difficult decision, but believes it was the right move for the club.
“It was very difficult for us, and especially for me personally, to make this decision. It wasn’t easy, but we believe it’s the right one. Merv is a truly great person and a player who has always put the team first. A true team player, we wish him all the best,” said Wollitz.
Biankadi was not a regular starter during his time at Energie Cottbus but remained an important member of the squad. Last season, the former Bochum player featured in 24 matches across all competitions, scoring five goals and providing two assists.
The midfielder’s departure comes as Energie Cottbus prepare for their return to Germany’s second tier following promotion last season. The club is now shaping its squad ahead of the new challenge, with changes expected as they look to compete at a higher level.
Despite his limited starting opportunities, Biankadi earned praise from the coach for his attitude and commitment to the team. Wollitz highlighted the player’s professionalism and his willingness to put the group’s interests ahead of his own.
The DR Congo international now leaves after one season with the promoted side, with Energie Cottbus thanking him for his contribution and wishing him success for the next stage of his career.
