Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke has opened up about his Nigerian heritage and plans to visit the country in the coming years.
Though eligible to represent Nigeria through his father, Solanke chose to play for England, earning his senior debut at 20 under Gareth Southgate. His England career took a hiatus before a long-awaited return this year.
One of Solanke’s proudest moments was winning the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup with the Young Lions, alongside several players of Nigerian descent, including Ademola Lookman, Fikayo Tomori, and Sheyi Ojo. Among them, Solanke holds Lookman, his close friend, in high regard. Reflecting on Lookman’s success, Solanke called him his “favourite Nigerian footballer,” praising his “extraordinary” contributions to both club and country.
In a recent interview with Showmax, Solanke also highlighted the impressive rise of Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen, who he described as “one of the best in the world” for his remarkable performances with both Napoli and the Super Eagles.
Solanke’s admiration for these Nigerian stars reveals a deep connection to his roots, despite his international career with England.
