Didier Drogba reflects on struggles during iconic season at Marseille
Didier Drogba has opened up about the challenges he faced during his prolific 2003-2004 season at Olympique de Marseille, where he netted 32 goals and delivered seven assists in a memorable campaign. Speaking on the French program L’Équipe du Soir, the Ivorian legend described the intense emotional toll of playing for the Marseille club, revealing how it impacted his performances.
Drogba shared that his passion for OM was so profound that he often struggled to complete matches, feeling physically and emotionally drained by the weight of his connection with the team and its fans.
“I was so moved to play for OM, at the Vélodrome, that I had difficulty going all the way,” Drogba admitted.
“The emotional charge was very intense… I was focused on the pitch, but at the same time I was listening to everything that was happening in the stands.
After 60 minutes, I was exhausted and I asked the coach to take me off because I couldn’t continue.”
The former Marseille forward, who later became a Premier League star with Chelsea, elaborated on the challenges he faced not just on the pitch but also off it, where he grappled with the overwhelming attention he received.
Known for his humble approach despite his success, Drogba recalled his surprise at how deeply fans were affected by his presence.
“We all want to be recognised, to be the best, but once that happens, you have to be ready to take it on,” he explained.
I had trouble understanding why some people cried when they saw me. I thought to myself: ‘But do you know who you’re talking about?’”
Drogba, who eventually went on to win four Premier League titles and a Champions League with Chelsea, also shared stories of the extreme fanfare he encountered in Marseille, an experience he says was unlike anything he has since encountered in his career.
He recounted how the passionate supporters sometimes pushed boundaries, leading to some extraordinary incidents. “I even had car accidents.
That kind of thing only happens in Marseille,” he noted with a hint of incredulity.
Despite the challenges, Drogba’s time at OM remains a defining chapter of his career, marking his transition to global recognition.
His 2003-2004 season at Marseille propelled him into the international spotlight, where he subsequently signed with Chelsea and cemented his status as one of the most celebrated African footballers in history.
The experience, while intense, played a crucial role in shaping the career and legacy of the Ivorian star, who continues to be revered by fans at the Vélodrome and beyond.
