Dani Carvajal joins Getafe after 23-year Real Madrid career

Dani Carvajal has joined Getafe on a one-year contract after leaving Real Madrid, with the 34-year-old defender aiming to continue his career in Spain’s top flight.

The right-back became a free agent in June when his contract with Real Madrid expired. He has now agreed terms with the Madrid-based club, who hope his experience will strengthen their squad.

Carvajal spent 23 years associated with Real Madrid and won 27 trophies during his time with the Spanish giants. Among those honours are six Champions League titles, placing him in the select group of players to have won European football’s premier club competition on six occasions.

He made 451 appearances for Real Madrid after returning from Bayer Leverkusen, where he spent the 2012-13 season.

Getafe coach Jose Bordalas is reported to have played an important part in persuading Carvajal to remain in the Spanish capital. The new signing is expected to compete for the right-back position, although he could also operate as a right-sided centre-back.

Carvajal’s move comes after a challenging final period at Real Madrid, during which injuries and the arrival of Trent Alexander-Arnold limited his opportunities.

He suffered a cruciate ligament injury in October 2024 and then sustained another serious knee problem a year later. Despite those setbacks, he arrives at Getafe with extensive experience of top-level football.

The former Spain international won 51 caps for his country and helped Spain claim the Nations League in 2023 and the European Championship in 2024.

Getafe announced the signing on Tuesday and said they hoped Carvajal’s experience and leadership would benefit the team during his time at the club.

“From Getafe CF, we want to welcome Dani Carvajal and wish him much success in this new stage. Welcome to the Coliseum, Dani!” the club said in a statement.

Carvajal could make his Getafe debut against Rayo Vallecano on 19 October, subject to his registration being completed in time.

He is also scheduled to return to the Santiago Bernabeu later in the season when Getafe visit Real Madrid in January.
