Corbin Mthunzi earns Zimbabwe call-up for Unity Cup after breakthrough season
Ipswich Town U21 defender Corbin Mthunzi has secured a place in Zimbabwe’s squad for the upcoming Unity Cup, marking another significant step in his rapid international rise following a promising campaign at club level.
The 18-year-old centre-back will join the Warriors for the four-nation tournament scheduled to take place at The Valley later this month, where Zimbabwe open their campaign against Nigeria in the semi-finals on Tuesday, May 26.
Depending on that result, they will face either India or Jamaica in the final or the third-place playoff on the Saturday.
Mthunzi’s inclusion comes just weeks after he made history as the first Ipswich Town player to earn a senior cap for Zimbabwe. He debuted during a friendly tournament in Botswana in March, featuring as a late substitute in a narrow 1-0 victory over Zambia.
That appearance underlined his growing reputation as one of the emerging defensive prospects eligible for the southern African nation.
Having joined Ipswich Town in April 2025 after departing Brighton & Hove Albion, Mthunzi quickly established himself as a consistent presence within the club’s U21 setup throughout the 2025/26 season.
His composure, positional awareness and physical profile have drawn attention, both domestically and internationally.
Despite representing England at U15 and U16 levels earlier in his development, Mthunzi remains eligible for Zimbabwe through his father, a pathway he has now firmly embraced at senior level.
He is joined in the squad by former Ipswich forward Tawanda Chirewa, currently on the books of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Chirewa spent the latter part of the season on loan at Barnsley, where his opportunities were limited largely to substitute appearances.
