Complex scenarios shape Egypt’s fate in U-20 World Cup after fair play blow
Egypt’s U-20 team endured a rollercoaster of emotions, joy, heartbreak, and hope, during their dramatic 2-1 win over Chile.
With a draw looming, Omar Khadr’s stunning last-minute goal clinched victory after a tense dispute with teammate Mohamed Abdallah over who would take the decisive free kick. Coach Osama Nabih instructed Khadr, who buried his shot brilliantly.
But fair play rules dampened celebrations. Egypt, Chile, and New Zealand all finished with 3 points, but Egypt fell behind Chile due to accumulating more yellow cards during the group stage. Five Egyptian players, plus the team manager, received bookings against Chile.
Now Egypt’s fate hangs in the balance, dependent on other group results. They must outperform Cuba and Brazil, both third-placed in their groups. Egypt needs either a draw between Cuba and Australia, or an Australian win by one goal, to retain their edge. They also count on a draw between Brazil and Spain; a win for either would leave Egypt behind.
The Egyptian delegation anxiously awaits news, hoping the final scenarios tilt their way.
