Clinton Njie signs with Rapid Bucharest, marking his fifth international move
Cameroonian international striker Clinton Njie has officially joined Romanian first division club Rapid Bucharest, marking his fifth country in a professional career that has spanned across Europe. Njie, who boasts 44 caps and 10 goals for his national team, has signed a contract that will keep him with the club until June 2026.
The 31-year-old forward arrives at Rapid Bucharest after spending the last two seasons with Turkish side Sivasspor.
Having been a free agent since the end of his tenure in Turkey, Njie’s move to Romania is seen as a significant addition to the Bucharest club.
Marius Sumudica, the head coach of Rapid Bucharest, had prioritized Njie’s signing, believing the experienced Cameroonian can bolster the club’s attacking options.
Rapid Bucharest, a club with a storied history that includes three Romanian championships and 14 runner-up finishes, is currently positioned 9th in a league of 16 teams.
Despite the club’s strong finish in the regular season last year, where they secured 2nd place, they struggled in the play-offs, ultimately finishing last among the top six teams.
The arrival of Njie is anticipated to inject much-needed firepower into a squad aiming to climb the league table after a less-than-ideal start to the current season.
Njie’s recent spell in Turkey was marred by limited playing time, with the forward featuring in just 10 matches and scoring a solitary goal.
Despite these challenges, he was still called up for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), though he did not see any action during the tournament.
Known for his pace and dribbling skills, Njie is determined to prove that he still has much to offer on the field.
Born in Buea, Cameroon, Njie began his professional journey with Olympique Lyonnais before moving to the English Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur.
His time in England was short-lived, and he soon returned to France, where he spent three seasons with Olympique de Marseille.
In 2019, he moved to Russia, joining Dynamo Moscow, where he also played for three seasons before making his way to Turkey.
Now, with his move to Rapid Bucharest, Njie embarks on a new chapter in his career, bringing his talents to a fifth country.
The forward, who was part of Cameroon’s 2017 AFCON-winning squad, is eager to make his mark in Romania and contribute to his new team’s success.
