Claude Le Roy has returned as head coach of the Republic of Congo national team at the age of 78, ending a five-year absence from football management and beginning a new chapter with the Red Devils more than a decade after his first spell in charge.

The experienced French coach has been appointed to lead Congo until the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, marking a remarkable comeback for one of African football’s most recognisable managerial figures.

Le Roy previously coached the Congolese national side between 2013 and 2015. His return comes 11 years after taking charge of the team for the first time and five years after stepping away from coaching.

The appointment signals Congo’s determination to revive its fortunes as it seeks to qualify for the next Africa Cup of Nations, having not appeared at the tournament since 2015.

Veteran coach answers call once again

Few coaches can match Claude Le Roy’s experience in African football.

Over several decades, the Frenchman has built a reputation as one of the continent’s most travelled and respected managers, taking charge of multiple national teams and leaving a lasting impact wherever he has worked.

Now, at 78, he is preparing for another challenge.

His return to Congo highlights his enduring passion for the game and reinforces the belief that experience remains a valuable asset in international football.

The veteran coach is expected to guide the Red Devils through their upcoming AFCON qualifying campaign, with the objective of helping the nation return to the continental stage.

Familiar surroundings for Le Roy

Unlike many managerial appointments, Le Roy’s return brings a sense of familiarity.

His previous spell with Congo between 2013 and 2015 provided him with knowledge of the country’s football culture and the expectations surrounding the national team.

That experience could prove valuable as he begins work with a side eager to end a lengthy absence from Africa’s premier football competition.

The new deal will keep him in charge until the next Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to take place in Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda in the summer of 2027.

Omar Daf joins coaching staff

Le Roy will not be working alone during his latest mission.

Former Sochaux and Amiens coach Omar Daf has been appointed as his assistant, forming part of the technical team tasked with guiding Congo through the qualification process.

The partnership combines Le Roy’s vast international experience with Daf’s coaching background as the Red Devils prepare for the challenges ahead.

Focus turns to AFCON qualification

Congo’s immediate attention will be on the qualifying campaign.

The Red Devils have been drawn in Group G alongside Cameroon, Comoros and Namibia.

The group presents a significant challenge, with every match expected to play a crucial role in determining qualification for the continental tournament.

For Congo, the objective is clear: secure a place at AFCON and end a wait that has stretched since their last appearance in 2015.

Another chapter in an extraordinary career

Le Roy’s coaching journey has included spells with several African national teams, including Cameroon, Senegal, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana and Togo.

His latest appointment adds another chapter to a career that has spanned decades.

At an age when many have long since retired, the Frenchman has chosen to return to the touchline once more.

Whether his second spell with Congo proves successful remains to be seen, but his return has already become one of the most notable coaching stories in African football.

For the Red Devils, the hope is that experience, continuity and ambition can help bring the nation back to the Africa Cup of Nations stage.
