Chippa United draw inspiration from OoSokhethabahle ahead of Sundowns stalemate

Chippa United may have faced criticism for moving some home matches to Buffalo City Municipality Stadium, but the club found an unlikely source of motivation in the dressing room before their recent fixtures.

The OoSokhethabahle Traditional Group were invited into the Chilli Boys’ dressing room before warm-ups for games against Milford FC and Mamelodi Sundowns, bringing music, dance and instruments to the players in KuGompo.

Their lively performance appeared to have an impact. Chippa United produced confident displays in both matches, holding high-flying Milford FC and Mamelodi Sundowns to draws.

The latest stalemate, against African giants Sundowns on Saturday, was particularly difficult for Chippa to accept after they came close to claiming a historic victory.

Sirgio Kammies put the hosts ahead with 12 minutes of normal time remaining, but a lapse in concentration with the final kick of stoppage time allowed Antonio van Wyk to equalise for the visitors.

The result left Chippa feeling they had surrendered two points. Their supporters had travelled from across the Eastern Cape and braved the rain to back the team, while OoSokhethabahle entertained the crowd throughout the match in their traditional style.

Sundowns manager Miguel Cardoso was also unhappy after the final whistle. He said the muddy pitch had affected the flow of the game and argued that the compact playing surface made it more difficult for his side to keep and circulate possession.

Cardoso had already expressed frustration with Chippa’s choice of venue while Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is being renovated. He questioned why the match had not been moved to Kings Park.

The Sundowns coach, however, appeared to overlook the circumstances behind Chippa’s previous decision to host Orlando Pirates in Durban. That move was made because both of the club’s local stadiums were awaiting PSL approval.

Chippa United will return to Buffalo City Municipality Stadium for several important home fixtures. Kruger United are due to visit in October, followed by Sekhukhune United and Kaizer Chiefs in November.

If the influence of the OoSokhethabahle Traditional Group continues to produce similar energy, Chippa United will hope their temporary home can become the setting for further strong performances and valuable points.
