Chelsea urged to strike early for Man City target Eli Junior Kroupi
Florent Malouda has urged former club Chelsea to act decisively in the pursuit of rising star Eli Junior Kroupi, warning that careful planning could be key if they are to win the race for one of Europe’s most sought-after young forwards.
Kroupi’s emergence at AFC Bournemouth has become one of the standout stories of the Premier League season.
The 19-year-old Frenchman of Ivorian descent has delivered a breakthrough campaign on the south coast, registering 11 goals in 29 appearances and playing a central role as Bournemouth edge closer to European qualification.
His sharp rise has not gone unnoticed, with several elite clubs, including Chelsea and Manchester City, monitoring his progress closely.
Speaking in an interview with Snabbare, Malouda highlighted both the potential and the timing required in handling Kroupi’s development. The former winger stressed that while the teenager’s talent is evident, a gradual approach may serve all parties best.
“Eli Junior Kroupi to Chelsea?, he’s a very good talent. I played against his father, I remember, in France, he was an Ivory Coast international player.
He did very well last season, one of the top players in France, and I’m very happy to see him doing well this season as well.
Again, I believe he needs to confirm it for one more season, at least in the Premier League, before going into one of the big clubs because I mentioned the competitive aspect. They’re looking to get game time and the confidence that comes from that.
“He might not get it at a top club if he jumps too early. So, I think he came to the Premier League to develop himself, to challenge himself, and he needs to keep doing that. So, even if a club like Chelsea were able to sign him, which would be a good thing, to send him on loan would be a better option than to keep him in the squad without game time.”
Kroupi himself has made no secret of his ambition, stating earlier in March that his long-term goals include winning the Ballon d’Or and playing for football’s biggest institutions. His performances have already etched his name into Premier League history, becoming the first teenager since the 1999/2000 season to reach double figures in a single campaign.
With competition intensifying for his signature, Chelsea now face a strategic decision over whether to move early or risk being outpaced in a rapidly developing transfer race.
