Chelsea thrash Bournemouth as Arsenal recover while Tottenham snatch late draw

Chelsea ended a run of three league matches without a win by beating Bournemouth 5–1, while Arsenal returned to winning ways against Leeds and Tottenham rescued a point against Manchester United with a late Dominic Solanke equaliser.

Tottenham’s 1–1 draw at Old Trafford saw both sides remain among the Premier League’s early strugglers. The match, dubbed ‘El Sackico’ because of the pressure on managers Roberto De Zerbi and Michael Carrick, appeared to be heading United’s way when Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring in the 73rd minute.

Matheus Cunha found Mbeumo inside the penalty area and the forward punished poor marking by finishing from an acute angle. Tottenham’s task became harder five minutes later when Uruguay midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off for headbutting United defender Luke Shaw during a confrontation.

However, Solanke kept Tottenham alive in the closing stages. He escaped the attention of Lisandro Martinez to head in Sandro Tonali’s cross and secure a point in a scrappy contest.

Tottenham are third from bottom and remain without a win after losing three of their opening six league matches. United are 12th, with only one league victory so far.

De Zerbi kept Tottenham in the Premier League on the final day of last season after taking charge late in the campaign, but the club’s form has not improved despite spending more than £300m ($429m) on new players in the close season. United adopted a more cautious approach in the transfer market after finishing third last term, but Carrick has so far struggled to find consistency from his squad.

Arsenal responded to their surprise 3–0 defeat by Brighton before the three-week international break by coming from behind to beat Leeds 2–1 at Emirates Stadium.

James Justin put Leeds ahead in the 55th minute after Arsenal failed to clear Gabriel Gudmundsson’s cross. Italy defender Riccardo Calafiori equalised seven minutes later, converting Ben White’s header from close range.

Substitute Bruno Guimaraes then scored the winner from the edge of the penalty area only six minutes after entering the match. It was his first goal at Emirates Stadium since his close-season move from Newcastle and gave Arsenal five league victories from six matches.

Arsenal are second, behind crisis-hit Manchester City on goal difference. City visit Liverpool on Sunday in their first match since being found guilty of more than 100 breaches of Premier League financial rules.

“We weren’t pleased against Brighton and today was an opportunity to put that right. We certainly reacted in the manner we expected,” said Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.

At Stamford Bridge, Jordan Henderson scored twice as Chelsea raced to a 5–1 victory over Bournemouth. Henderson’s curling finish after 68 seconds was his first Chelsea goal, before Morgan Rogers’ shot took a deflection off Bournemouth defender Antonio Silva in the third minute.

Joao Pedro added a third shortly after half-time, but Evanilson pulled one back in the 51st minute when Moises Caicedo’s miscued clearance deflected into the net. Chelsea have now gone 22 league matches without keeping a clean sheet.

Joao Pedro scored again in the 67th minute, before 36-year-old Henderson completed his double with a powerful free-kick three minutes later. Chelsea have scored 23 goals in eight matches in all competitions this season.

“We signed him for everything and if he is able to score two beauties like today we are more than happy for him,” said manager Xabi Alonso.

Aston Villa’s difficult start continued with a 2–2 home draw against fourth-placed Brentford. Ipswich beat winless Fulham 2–1 at Portman Road, while 10-man Brighton defeated Sunderland 2–0 to strengthen their grip on third place.
