Chelsea and Atletico Madrid among clubs tracking Relebohile Mofokeng

Former Orlando Pirates player Relebohile Mofokeng has emerged as a reported target for several major European clubs after making an impressive start to life at Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.

Chelsea, Brighton & Hove Albion, Atletico Madrid and Napoli are all understood to be monitoring the 21-year-old, who joined the Belgian club in July 2026 on a five-year contract.

Mofokeng has made an immediate impact since moving to the Belgian Pro League. His first appearance came as a substitute in the Belgian Super Cup final against Club Brugge, where he converted the winning penalty in the shootout.

The versatile attacker has continued to progress under head coach David Hubert, scoring four goals in his early appearances for Union SG. He also opened his European account in September, finding the net against Viktoria Plzen in the UEFA Europa League.

His club form was followed by a breakthrough performance for South Africa during the latest international window.

Mofokeng scored twice in Bafana Bafana’s 5-0 victory over Eritrea in Cairo in their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign. He opened the scoring in the first half before producing a solo run for his second goal, going past two defenders and finishing confidently.

The brace brought his first senior international goals and further raised his profile beyond Belgium, only three months after his arrival at Union Saint-Gilloise.

Mofokeng was not involved as South Africa secured a 1-0 win over Egypt in Cairo. He is now due to return to his club, where he is expected to play this weekend when Union Saint-Gilloise host Oud-Heverlee Leuven.

Union SG’s strong start to the Belgian Pro League campaign has provided the forward with a platform to establish himself in European football. However, continued interest from clubs across the continent could mean his time in Belgium is shorter than anticipated if those approaches develop further.

The former Orlando Pirates player’s progress has been particularly rapid since his move in July. After making a decisive contribution in the Belgian Super Cup, he has added regular league goals and a European strike before making his mark on the international stage.

His performances against Eritrea have now placed him among the players attracting attention from some of Europe’s most prominent clubs, with Chelsea, Brighton & Hove Albion, Atletico Madrid and Napoli reported to be keeping watch on his situation.
