Congolese ex-midfielder Cédric Makiadi takes charge of Werder Bremen U23 side
Former Congolese international Cédric Makiadi has been promoted to head coach of Werder Bremen’s U23 team ahead of the 2026/27 season after several years working within the club’s youth academy.
The 42-year-old has gradually progressed through different coaching roles at the Bundesliga side, having previously managed the U16, U17 and U19 teams.
His latest appointment marks another major step in his coaching career and places him in charge of Werder Bremen’s reserve side as the club continues to strengthen its internal development structure.
Makiadi has spent recent years helping to train and guide several generations of young players within the academy system. His promotion is viewed as recognition for both his long-term commitment to the club and his work in youth development.
The former midfielder will now face a different challenge in the Regionalliga, the fourth tier of German football, where Werder Bremen’s U23 side competes.
The level is considered significantly more demanding than youth football, with reserve teams regularly facing experienced senior opposition throughout the season.
For Makiadi, the move represents a transition into a more competitive coaching environment after building experience across multiple age groups at the club.
The appointment also highlights the growing presence of former African internationals within coaching structures across European football.
More former players from the continent are continuing their careers from the touchline after retirement, taking up positions in youth academies and senior teams.
Makiadi’s progression within Werder Bremen has been steady since joining the club’s coaching setup. His familiarity with the academy system and understanding of the club’s philosophy are expected to play an important role as he takes charge of the reserve side.
The former Congolese midfielder spent part of his playing career in Germany and remains closely connected to Werder Bremen through his development work with young footballers.
His new role now offers him the opportunity to oversee players making the transition between academy football and the senior professional level.
The promotion marks another important chapter in Makiadi’s post-playing career and reflects the confidence Werder Bremen have placed in his long-term development as a coach.
