World Cup 2026: Historic Canada become first team to reach round of 16
Canada became the first nation to book a place in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Stephen Eustáquio’s stoppage-time goal secured a 1-0 victory over South Africa in Los Angeles.
The tournament co-hosts had surrendered top spot in their group to Switzerland, leaving them with a knockout meeting against South Africa as they sought to extend their World Cup campaign.
After dominating much of the contest but failing to convert a series of chances, Canada finally broke through in added time to claim a historic victory.
Captain Stephen Eustáquio scored the decisive goal in the 90th+2 minute, sending Jesse Marsch’s side into the last 16 for the first time in the country’s World Cup history.
The midfielder intercepted a defensive clearance following a Jacob Shaffelburg cross before striking a half-volley that South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was unable to stop.
The win also made Canada the first team to secure a place in the Round of 16 at the expanded 2026 tournament.
Canada rewarded for dominant performance
Canada controlled large periods of the match but faced determined resistance from a South African side that defended resolutely throughout the evening.
South Africa hold firm before late breakthrough
Despite enjoying most of the possession and creating the better opportunities, the hosts struggled to find a way past an inspired Ronwen Williams and a disciplined South African defence.
Before half-time, Moïse Bombito came close to breaking the deadlock with a header that was cleared off the line by Aubrey Modiba.
The danger was not over, but Williams reacted quickly to deny Tajon Buchanan from the rebound in one of Canada’s best first-half opportunities.
Although Canada looked the more likely side to score, South Africa remained competitive and organised, forcing their opponents to remain patient.
The balance of play suggested Canada had the upper hand, but the scoreline remained level as both teams headed into the second half.
Williams keeps South Africa in the contest
The tempo increased after the interval as both teams searched for the opening goal.
Goalkeeper produces series of important saves
South Africa created moments of danger of their own, with Oswin Appollis testing the Canadian defence during an energetic second half.
Canada, however, continued to generate the clearer opportunities.
Tani Oluwaseyi appeared destined to score after being played through by Niko Sigur, only for Williams to make another vital intervention.
Defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi then completed the recovery by clearing the rebound away from danger.
Substitute Alphonso Davies also threatened after entering the match, while Jonathan David was denied by yet another important save from Williams as Canada intensified the pressure.
Eustáquio sends Canada into history
Canada’s persistence was finally rewarded deep into added time.
Captain delivers decisive moment
With the match heading towards extra time, Jacob Shaffelburg delivered a cross into the penalty area that was only partially cleared by the South African defence.
Eustáquio reacted quickest to the loose ball, controlling the situation before sending a powerful half-volley beyond Williams to seal a dramatic 1-0 victory.
The goal sparked celebrations among the home supporters and confirmed Canada’s place in the Round of 16.
Having reached the knockout stage for the first time in their World Cup history, Jesse Marsch’s side will now face the winner of the Netherlands versus Morocco match on Saturday, 4 July, in Houston.
The victory represents another significant milestone for the co-hosts, whose determined display was eventually rewarded after maintaining pressure throughout the contest and finding the decisive breakthrough in the closing moments.
