Jean Crépin Nyamsi declares FIFA presidential ambition

Cameroonian football administrator Jean Crépin Nyamsi has made a bold declaration of intent, announcing his ambition to contest for the presidency of world football’s governing body, FIFA, in 2027.

In a revealing interview broadcast on Afo Media on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, Nyamsi confirmed that he is shifting his focus from national football governance to the global stage, after previously failing in his bid to take control of the Cameroonian Football Federation.

“You change things from the top… This time, I have decided to stand as a candidate for the International Federation of Association Football,” he stated, signalling a renewed and expanded political ambition within football administration.

Nyamsi’s declaration places him on a direct collision course with the current FIFA leadership under Gianni Infantino, who is widely expected to seek re-election. His announcement comes at a politically sensitive moment, as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and its 54 member associations have already thrown their full support behind Infantino’s continued leadership.

CAF’s unified backing of Infantino significantly strengthens the incumbent president’s position ahead of the 2027 elections, effectively presenting a continental bloc in favour of continuity at the top of world football governance.

Despite this, Nyamsi appears undeterred, positioning himself as a reform-minded alternative seeking to “change things from the top,” though he did not go into detail about his specific policy proposals or campaign agenda during the interview.

His entry into the race adds an unexpected layer to the early build-up toward the FIFA presidential election, which is already expected to be shaped by debates around governance, development funding, global representation, and the balance of power within international football structures.

While Nyamsi remains a relatively lesser-known figure on the global football stage compared to established administrators, his declaration signals an intent to broaden his influence beyond Cameroon and into the highest levels of the sport’s political hierarchy.

For now, however, the path ahead appears steep. With CAF firmly aligned behind Infantino and other potential challengers yet to formally emerge, Nyamsi’s candidacy sets the stage for what could become a highly political and tightly controlled election cycle in world football governance.
