Cameroon football: Pressure mounts on Samuel Eto’o over coach appointment
The Cameroonian Ministry of Sports has intensified pressure on the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fécafoot), particularly targeting its president, Samuel Eto’o, regarding the appointment of new coach Marc Brys.
Recent developments have seen FIFA take precautionary measures by removing Marc Brys’ name as Cameroon’s coach from its official website.
This move underscores the uncertainty surrounding the Belgian tactician’s status.
Despite ongoing preparations for his anticipated debut in June for the resumption of 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Brys lacks formal recognition from Fécafoot.
This discrepancy has sparked tensions between the ministry and the federation.
Cyrille Tollo, the technical advisor to the Minister of Sports, provided insights on the evolving situation during an appearance on the program “Libre Expression” on Info TV.
Tollo noted a perceived improvement in Samuel Eto’o’s stance, citing Fécafoot’s failure to appoint an alternative coach within the stipulated 72-hour timeframe as evidence of de-escalation.
While acknowledging this apparent détente, Tollo maintained a cautious tone, emphasizing the unresolved nature of Brys’ contractual status.
Despite Fécafoot’s refraining from nominating an alternative coach, Eto’o has yet to formalize Brys’ appointment, leaving room for continued uncertainty.
Tollo’s remarks underscored the delicate balance of power between the ministry and Fécafoot, with the former emphasizing the imperative of avoiding actions that could jeopardize Cameroon’s participation in international competitions.
While expressing confidence that Fécafoot would ultimately comply with Brys’ recommendations, Tollo’s underlying message conveyed a sense of urgency for Eto’o and the federation to resolve the impasse swiftly to avert potential disqualification risks for the Indomitable Lions.
As the standoff between the ministry and Fécafoot continues, the spotlight remains firmly fixed on Samuel Eto’o and the pressing need for decisive action to secure Cameroon’s footballing future.
