The Confederation of African Football (CAF) will introduce video assistant referee (VAR) technology from the group-stage of the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup this season.
The long-awaited decision represents a significant change in the way matches in Africa’s club competitions will be officiated. CAF interim secretary general Samson Adamu confirmed that VAR had been approved for this stage of both tournaments.
The move reflects CAF’s intention to use modern technology to improve the accuracy of refereeing decisions and reduce the impact of major errors.
VAR will be available to assist officials in controversial situations that could affect the outcome of matches, including penalty decisions, direct red-card incidents and checks on whether goals should stand.
