CAF pays tribute to Riyad Mahrez

The Confederation of African Football has paid a heartfelt tribute to Riyad Mahrez following his retirement from international football.

Mahrez, who captained the Algeria for several years, has called it a quit on international career after the sides’ elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32.

The experienced winger was in action when the North African outfit succumbed to a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland on Friday morning.

Following his retirement from international football, the continental football governing body has expressed admiration and gratitude for the Algerian captain’s contribution to African football, highlighting both his achievements and lasting impact on the continent’s game.

“You gave us memories that time can never take away. Thank you, Riyad Mahrez,” CAF wrote.

Mahrez’s international career stands among the most decorated in Algerian history. Over the years, he became the face of a generation that redefined Algeria’s presence on the global stage, combining technical brilliance with decisive leadership.

His crowning achievement came at the Africa Cup of Nations 2019, where he captained Algeria to a historic title. That triumph remains one of the most celebrated moments in modern Algerian sport, with Mahrez playing a central role both on and off the pitch.

Across his international career, he amassed 119 caps, scoring 40 goals and providing 45 assists, consistently serving as the creative heartbeat of the national team.

The 2026 World Cup marked Mahrez’s final appearance for Algeria, as the team’s elimination in the knockout stage prompted reflection on the end of an era. Shortly after the match, the 35-year-old confirmed that he had played his last game in national colours.

For many supporters, the moment symbolised the closing of a golden chapter defined by leadership, flair, and unforgettable performances in major tournaments.

Mahrez’s influence extends far beyond statistics. He became one of Africa’s most recognisable football exports, excelling at the highest levels of European football while remaining a key figure for his national team.

His ability to decide matches with creativity and composure under pressure made him a standout figure in world football, while his leadership helped inspire a new generation of North African talent.

CAF’s tribute reflects that broader impact, acknowledging not just his achievements with Algeria but his contribution to raising the profile of African football globally.

With Mahrez stepping away, Algeria now face the challenge of transitioning into a new generation without their long-time captain and talisman. His departure leaves a significant gap in experience and creativity, both of which defined the team’s identity for more than a decade.
