The South African Football Association (SAFA) will hold a press conference at SAFA House on Friday, with the future of Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos expected to be the central issue as his contract runs down.

Broos’ current deal is due to expire at the end of July 2026, and tomorrow’s briefing is widely anticipated to clarify whether the 72-year-old Belgian will remain in charge of the South Africa men’s national team beyond that date.

There is increasing expectation within South African football circles that Broos, who has been in the post for five years, will be asked to extend his tenure by a further 12 months. However, the possibility that he could depart his role has not been completely dismissed.

SAFA confirmed that the press conference will take place at SAFA House on Friday, 31 July, starting at 12:00.

Broos’ record with Bafana Bafana

Broos was appointed Bafana Bafana head coach in May 2021 and has since overseen a period of renewed competitiveness for the national side.

Under his guidance, South Africa qualified for consecutive Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments. At the 2023 edition of the competition, Bafana Bafana secured a bronze medal, finishing third in the tournament.

Broos’ most recent achievement came at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the Americas, where he led South Africa into the knockout stages for the first time in the country’s history. That run marked a significant milestone for Bafana Bafana on the global stage.

The experienced coach has long been regarded as a specialist in African football, having previously led Cameroon to the Africa Cup of Nations title in 2017.

Should Broos agree to remain as head coach, his extended spell would see him take charge of Bafana Bafana throughout the qualifying campaign for the next Africa Cup of Nations.
