Ibrahim Maza’s future at Bayer Leverkusen is taking an unexpected turn, with the club now considering a new contract for the Algeria international despite growing interest from several Premier League sides.
The 20-year-old attacking midfielder joined Leverkusen from Hertha Berlin in the summer of 2025 and has gradually convinced the club’s hierarchy that he should form part of their plans for the years ahead.
Maza is already under contract until June 2030, but Sky Sport Germany reports that Leverkusen have opened discussions with his representatives about extending the agreement.
The German club want to achieve two objectives: protect the future of one of their most promising players and recognise his development with a significant increase in salary. Maza has scored one goal and provided one assist since the start of the season.
Initial talks have reportedly taken place, with Maza understood to be receptive to the possibility of remaining at Leverkusen for the long term. The player is said to be settled at the club and open to continuing his progress there.
However, negotiations may not be straightforward because of the attention surrounding him.
Several Premier League clubs are monitoring Maza’s situation, attracted by his profile and potential. Manchester City have been notably interested since last season, increasing the possibility of approaches during future transfer windows.
Leverkusen’s apparent change of approach is the most significant development.
According to Sky Sport, the club had been prepared to consider selling Maza during the summer 2026 transfer window if they received an especially attractive financial offer.
The intention was not specifically to move the player on. Maza had successfully stepped into the role previously occupied by Florian Wirtz, while his development was progressing as expected. However, Leverkusen did not want to miss the opportunity of making a major sale if an exceptional proposal arrived.
No offer was ultimately considered convincing enough. Several months later, the club’s position appears to have shifted: rather than preparing for a possible transfer, Leverkusen now want to extend Maza’s contract and improve his financial terms.
No new agreement has yet been officially confirmed, and it remains to be seen whether the discussions will lead to a deal.
Leverkusen’s intentions are nevertheless clear. Maza is regarded as an important part of the club’s long-term project, and any club hoping to change those plans would need to make a substantial financial commitment.
