Bounou’s Al Hilal place under scrutiny as Morocco keeper resists reserve role

Yassine Bounou’s future at Al Hilal has been thrown into doubt, with the Morocco goalkeeper reportedly unwilling to accept a backup position as the Saudi Pro League club consider reshaping their foreign-player quota.

Bounou, who joined Al Hilal from Sevilla in the summer 2023 transfer window, has been one of the standout performers for the Riyadh giants, helping “Al-Zaeem” win five domestic trophies and impressing at the FIFA Club World Cup.

Despite his impact, local and Moroccan media report that Al Hilal are weighing up removing Bounou from their domestic squad list in order to free up a foreign-player slot ahead of next season.

According to those reports, the club are considering registering Saudi Arabia international goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais in Bounou’s place for local competitions, allowing Al Hilal to sign an additional overseas outfield player.

Key meeting planned after summer break

Moroccan outlet Le Site Info Sport says Al Hilal officials are waiting for Bounou to return from his summer holiday before holding what is being described as a decisive meeting over his future.

The discussions are expected to determine whether the 33-year-old remains with the club or leaves during the current transfer window, amid external interest from clubs in England, Spain and Turkey.

The same report adds that, in light of that interest, Al Hilal’s hierarchy are seriously considering a sale as they look to reorganise their foreign contingent while entrusting the domestic goalkeeping duties to Mohammed Al Owais.

Bounou unwilling to be used sparingly

Le Site Info Sport also reports that Bounou is not keen to stay at Al Hilal if it means being relegated to the role of reserve goalkeeper and playing only in the AFC Champions League Elite.

The Morocco international is described as having a strong competitive character and is said to be unwilling to spend extended periods on the bench.

Since arriving from Sevilla, Bounou has been a central figure in Al Hilal’s recent success, both in the league and cup competitions, and his displays at the FIFA Club World Cup drew widespread praise.
