Borussia Dortmund face stiff competition to sign Morocco defender Aït Boudlal
Borussia Dortmund are set to face serious competition in their pursuit of highly rated young Moroccan defender Abdelhamid Aït Boudlal ahead of the summer window.
The 19-year-old centre-back has attracted significant interest following his impressive performances for Stade Rennais in Ligue 1 this season.
The Moroccan international has recently re-established himself in the Rennes backline after a period of uncertainty under new management. Aït Boudlal had been a regular starter in the first half of the Ligue 1 season, earning praise for his composure and maturity beyond his years — performances that even earned him his first senior cap for Morocco national football team in November.
However, a managerial change disrupted his momentum, with the teenager finding himself pushed down the pecking order. Under new boss Franck Haise, Aït Boudlal did not feature in the first two matches and failed to start any of the first five games in charge, raising questions about his immediate role in the squad.
Despite that setback, the young defender has forced his way back into contention. He was recalled for the victory over Stade Brestois and followed it up with another start in the win against SCO Angers, where he impressed enough to retain his place in the starting XI.
His return to form has not gone unnoticed across Europe. Borussia Dortmund are reportedly monitoring his situation closely, identifying him as a long-term defensive prospect. However, the Bundesliga side are now expected to face growing competition from other top clubs also tracking the highly rated teenager.
Rennes, meanwhile, are aware of the rising interest but are keen to hold on to one of their most promising young talents. The club is already bracing for the potential departure of another defensive prospect, with Jérémy Jacquet heavily linked with a move to Liverpool, and are reluctant to see further defensive depth leave in the same window.
Aït Boudlal’s development has become a key talking point within the club, with his blend of physical presence, tactical awareness, and composure on the ball marking him out as a modern centre-back in high demand.
As interest intensifies, Rennes face a familiar challenge in European football — balancing player development with retention in the face of elite-level suitors.
For now, Aït Boudlal remains focused on cementing his place in the starting lineup. But with Europe’s attention growing louder, his performances in the coming months could define not just Rennes’ defensive stability, but also the next step in his rapidly rising career.
