Betway Premiership: Pick your Team of the Week after dramatic weekend

The latest Betway Premiership fixtures produced a series of close contests, a first win for Kruger United and a major statement from promoted Milford FC, who beat Richards Bay FC 5-1.

The weekend began at Athlone Stadium on Friday, where Stellenbosch FC were held to a 1-1 draw by Sekhukhune United. Bethuel Muzeu put the visitors in front in the 63rd minute, but former Babina Noko striker Bradley Grobler equalised for Stellenbosch three minutes before full-time.

Both sides created further opportunities, but neither could find a winning goal as the points were shared.

AmaZulu FC, third in the table, hosted relegation-threatened Marumo Gallants at the Princess Magogo Stadium on Saturday, only days after Gallants parted company with coach Phuti Mohafe.

Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya maintained his strong start to the season by scoring in the 37th minute to give coach Arthur Zwane’s side the lead. Marumo Gallants were unable to respond and their task became even harder when Edgar Manaka was sent off in the 77th minute.

The solitary goal proved enough for AmaZulu, who moved to 13 points from six matches.

Later on Saturday, Chippa United welcomed Mamelodi Sundowns to Buffalo City Stadium still searching for their first win. The visitors were also looking to continue their strong record against the Gqeberha-based side, while Chippa sought a first-ever victory over the CAF Champions League Champions.

A rain-affected pitch made conditions difficult, and the match appeared to be heading for a goalless draw until both teams turned to their substitutes. Sirgio Kammies scored with his first touch after coming on in the 78th minute, but Antonio Van Wyk levelled 30 seconds before the final whistle after the home defence failed to deal with a routine cross from Thapelo Morena.

Promoted Milford FC delivered the standout result on Sunday, defeating Richards Bay FC 5-1 to claim their third win of the season.

Siphosethu Ndlabi opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 28th minute before Mvelo Zikakaya struck twice, putting Milford firmly in control against The Natal Rich Boyz. Mehluleli Ndelu scored his first goal for the club in the 77th minute, and Phakamani Jwarha added a fourth for the Premiership newcomers.

Jabulile Gxakoshe, introduced as a substitute, completed the scoring in injury time to round off the convincing victory for coach Dr Xanti Pupuma’s team.

Siwelele FC and Golden Arrows drew 1-1, while another newly promoted side, Kruger United, recorded a surprise 1-0 victory over TS Galaxy to climb to 13th in the table.
