Mamelodi Sundowns have made six signings since the start of last season as part of a long-term plan to refresh their squad.
The Tshwane club’s recruitment strategy is aimed at ensuring young players are ready to take over as a number of their established figures approach or pass the age of 30.
Among the senior outfield players aged over 30 are Themba Zwane, Grant Kekana, Thapelo Morena, Mothobi Mvala, Khuliso Mudau, Aubrey Modiba and Bathusi Aubaas. Iqraam Rayners will turn 31 in December.
The club also face a clear need to develop a goalkeeper for the future. Every goalkeeper currently in the first-team squad is at least 32 years old, making it important for Sundowns to bring through a younger option who can learn from the experienced players.
Sundowns have therefore continued a recruitment approach they have used for some time, identifying young talent capable of stepping into the first team when opportunities arise. The intention is to avoid being left short when senior players eventually depart.
The club are also preparing for the possible departure of Marcelo Allende at the end of the season. Finding a long-term successor for the midfielder has become an important part of those plans.
National under-20 captain and midfielder Lazola Maku is regarded as a player who could fill that role for many years. His development gives Sundowns another potential solution as they prepare for the next stage of the squad’s evolution.
The six young signings made since the beginning of last season reflect the club’s effort to build a group capable of replacing its older core while maintaining continuity in the first team.
