Benzema’s proposed Lyon farewell falls through over Saudi league role

Karim Benzema’s hopes of ending his playing career at Olympique Lyonnais have been frustrated by a contract that keeps him tied to the Saudi Pro League until 2030.

French newspaper L’Equipe reports that Lyon seriously considered bringing back the 38-year-old forward during the current summer transfer window. The move would have allowed one of the club’s most celebrated academy graduates to return to the stadium where his professional career began.

Benzema was understood to be enthusiastic about the possibility. According to the report, he was even prepared to play a full season for Lyon without receiving a salary, motivated by his affection for the club and the city where he was born and raised.

Lyon’s management did examine the prospect of signing him, with people close to the player confirming that discussions had taken place. However, the main obstacle was not the French club’s finances. Instead, Benzema remained bound by commitments to the Saudi football authorities.

The former Real Madrid player became a free agent around a week ago after reaching an agreement to end his contract with Al-Hilal. During his time in Saudi Arabia, Benzema won one league title and two cup trophies, as well as being named the competition’s best player.

Those achievements did not lead to a return to France, however. Although his playing contract with Al-Hilal has ended, Benzema still has another agreement with the Saudi Pro League. He is contracted to serve as an ambassador for the competition until 2030.

L’Equipe says Benzema is committed to honouring that arrangement. On the information provided by the newspaper, the agreement currently prevents him from signing a professional playing contract in another country.

As a result, the proposed return to Lyon was blocked by Benzema’s obligations away from the pitch. That was despite the player’s willingness to complete the final chapter of his career at the club where he developed, and to do so without financial reward.

Benzema’s connection with Lyon remains strong. He regularly returns to the city, and continues to maintain a clear bond with the club that gave him his first opportunity at senior level. He left Lyon for Real Madrid in 2009 in a transfer that transformed the course of his career.

The forward had previously spoken about the possibility of returning, although he appeared uncertain about whether it would be the right decision.

“It is difficult to say that I want to return there, because I left a very beautiful image… Nobody knows what could happen. It is not about being afraid to return, but sometimes it is better to leave things as they are,” he said.

Those comments now appear more significant in light of L’Equipe’s report. Benzema’s return was not simply a matter of speculation among supporters or in the media: there was genuine interest from both the player and Lyon. But his long-term ambassadorial commitment to the Saudi Pro League ultimately prevented the reunion from taking place.
