At the beginning of December, during a Belgian championship match against Louvain, Medhi Carcela, a player from Standard Liège, erupted in anger, delivering a violent blow to Bjorn Ruytinx’s face. This retaliation followed a dangerous tackle by Ruytinx that had left Carcela seriously injured. Despite the severity of Carcela’s action, he received only a one-match suspension.
Standard Liège deems this punishment too lenient considering the repercussions of Ruytinx’s tackle. Consequently, the club has chosen to pursue legal action against Bjorn Ruytinx.
“In our opinion, this is not an accident but a deliberate attack. The action was premeditated and deliberate, it can legally be qualified as a crime,” explained the Belgian club on its website. “Standard de Liège and Mehdi Carcela have decided to initiate civil proceedings against Mr Ruytinx and the OHL club in order to obtain compensation for the damage suffered,” the statement continued.
