KVC Westerlo has secured a promising addition to its squad ahead of their return to the Belgian First Division by signing Frédéric Gounongbe. The Belgian-Beninese striker joins on a free transfer after leaving RWDM Brussels, a club that suffered relegation to the third tier due to financial difficulties. Gounongbe opted not to renew his contract under those uncertain conditions.
Gounongbe, who previously played for Woluwé Zaventem and briefly for Zulte Waregem (without making an impact there), made a name for himself this season with RWDM by scoring 11 goals, many of them crucial, including his standout headers. His performances played a key role in RWDM’s solid 8th-place finish, and his move to Westerlo — the champions of the second division — marks a step up to top-flight football. He has signed with Westerlo until June 2016.
