Former Manchester United forward Bebé has reflected candidly on his formative years in England, describing his time under legendary manager Alex Ferguson as both challenging and invaluable.

Bebe’s move to Old Trafford as a relatively unknown 21-year-old remains one of football’s most unusual transfers.

Thrust into one of the world’s biggest clubs with limited top-level experience, the Cape Verdean admits the transition was far from straightforward.

“It was very difficult for a 21-year-old kid to adapt… it was very difficult for me.”

Despite the struggles, he holds no regrets about the opportunity, viewing it as a defining learning experience.

The exposure to elite standards, world-class teammates and a demanding environment shaped his development, even if he now believes he arrived before he was fully prepared.

“I think I needed a bit more experience… but these are experiences that remain with me.”

Central to that period was Ferguson’s personal guidance. Bebe revealed the extent of the Scot’s support, both professionally and personally, highlighting a relationship that went beyond the pitch.

From providing advice to offering practical help, Ferguson played a key role in easing his transition into English football.

“He looked after me a lot… he treated me very well.”

One of the most striking details from his time at the club was living in a property owned by Ferguson, underlining the manager’s hands-on approach in nurturing young players.

“The first house I went to, I rented it from him.”

Bebe credits Ferguson with instilling discipline and encouraging him to learn from senior professionals, lessons that have remained with him throughout his career. While his spell at United did not reach the heights many expected, the experience left a lasting impression.

“I learned a lot with a lot of players, with the coach.”

Now approaching the end of his playing days, Bebe views his time at United as a crucial chapter rather than a missed opportunity.
