Bayern Munich held by Augsburg after Manuel Neuer’s eight-second error

Bayern Munich were held to a 2-2 draw by Augsburg in the Bavarian derby after goalkeeper Manuel Neuer’s early mistake gifted the hosts the fastest goal in Bundesliga history.

The fifth-round match at WWK ARENA began with a remarkable setback for Vincent Kompany’s side. Just eight seconds after kick-off, Neuer failed to control a back-pass from Luis Diaz, allowing the ball to reach Robin Fellhauer, who finished into an empty net.

Augsburg started the match with greater intensity and retained their lead until the opening stages of the second half. Bayern briefly thought they had equalised, but the referee ruled out their goal for offside.

The visitors eventually levelled in the 55th minute through Ismael Saibari. The Morocco international collected a pass from Harry Kane inside the penalty area and produced a composed finish past the Augsburg defence.

Augsburg restored their advantage nine minutes later. Neuer saved Calvin Braekman’s effort, but Rodrigo Ribeiro reacted quickest to the rebound and fired into the net to put the home side back in front.

Bayern rescued a point with 10 minutes remaining. Substitute Nathaniel Brown completed a move involving Kane and Aleksandar Pavlovic, receiving a low cross from the England captain before sending a left-footed shot into the net from close range.

The second half was marked by Bayern’s repeated struggles with the offside trap. Four goals scored by the visitors were disallowed for offside, while they also missed several opportunities to take control of the game. Serge Gnabry was among those to go close, with one effort striking the post.

The result leaves Bayern Munich on 11 points and second in the Bundesliga table, two points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund. Dortmund had also drawn 2-2 with Werder Bremen on Friday evening.

Bayern required victory to move to the top of the standings on goal difference, but their failure to overcome Augsburg means they remain behind Dortmund.

Augsburg move up to eight points and sit fifth in the Bundesliga table.
