Barcelona’s pre-season route leads back to Basel before Joan Gamper Trophy

Barcelona will travel to Switzerland to face Basel in a pre-season friendly on Sunday, 16 August, as part of their preparations for the 2026-27 campaign.

The match will take place at St. Jakob-Park at 16:30 CEST, with Hansi Flick’s side set to visit one of Switzerland’s most prominent football stadiums.

The fixture will be Barcelona’s third match of their pre-season programme. It follows a friendly against Birmingham City and a three-team tournament in Udine involving Nottingham Forest and Udinese.

Barcelona’s final preparation match before the competitive season begins will be the Joan Gamper Trophy against Egyptian club Al Ahly. That fixture will also include the official presentation of the squad to supporters at the club’s home stadium.

The trip to Basel will reunite Barcelona with a venue that holds an important place in the club’s history, although the two teams have met only twice in official competition.

Those meetings came during the group stage of the 2008-09 UEFA Champions League. Barcelona recorded a 5-0 victory at St. Jakob-Park, with goals from Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, Bojan Krkic, who scored twice, and Xavi Hernandez.

The return fixture at Camp Nou ended in a 1-1 draw, with Messi also finding the net for the Catalan side.

Barcelona had previously faced a team representing the city of Basel twice in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup during the 1958-60 competition. They won both matches, taking the first 2-1 away from home before completing a 5-2 victory in the second leg.

A city tied to Barcelona history

Basel’s significance to Barcelona extends beyond those meetings.

On 16 May 1979, the Swiss city hosted the European Cup Winners’ Cup final between Barcelona and Fortuna Dusseldorf. Barcelona prevailed 4-3 after an unforgettable match that went into extra time.

The victory delivered Barcelona the first major European trophy in their history. It was also marked by an extraordinary show of support from the club’s followers, with about 30,000 Barcelona fans travelling to Switzerland for the final.

That journey became the first major overseas expedition by Barcelona supporters to attend a European final.

More than four decades later, Barcelona will return to Basel, a city permanently associated with one of the most memorable chapters in the club’s history. Their latest visit will form part of a pre-season schedule designed to prepare Flick’s team for the 2026-27 season before the squad is presented to supporters in the Joan Gamper Trophy against Al Ahly.
