Barcelona’s Ferran Torres sale opens door for Rodri move and summer rebuild

Barcelona believe Ferran Torres’ move to Paris Saint-Germain can strengthen their finances and give them greater freedom in the transfer market, rather than representing a significant sporting setback.

The France champions have completed the signing of the Spain forward from Barcelona for 50m euros, with Torres taking the number nine shirt at Paris Saint-Germain. Barcelona regard the deal as a successful piece of business, particularly because the 25-year-old had only one year remaining on his contract.

According to Spanish newspaper Sport, Torres’ departure ranks as the fifth-biggest sale in Barcelona’s history. The club’s financial benefit will not be limited to the transfer fee, as removing the player from the wage bill will also create additional room under La Liga’s financial fair play regulations.

That improved position is expected to help Barcelona register new players and operate more effectively during the current transfer window. One of the club’s main targets is Spain midfielder Rodri, and the income generated by Torres’ departure is viewed as an important boost to those plans.

Barcelona had considered Torres an important part of their squad in recent seasons, but the club does not believe his exit will cause major damage to the team. The transfer has instead been presented as an opportunity to redirect resources towards rebuilding the squad.

The loss of Torres, alongside the departure of Robert Lewandowski, means Barcelona currently have no recognised central striker in their first-team group. However, head coach Hansi Flick is not thought to be concerned about the situation because the club expects to bring in one or two forwards before the start of the new campaign.

Argentina forward Julian Alvarez is understood to be the leading option among the candidates being considered by Barcelona. The club’s sporting department is also examining alternative targets as it assesses how best to replace the goals and attacking presence lost through the two departures.

Flick is also considering using a false nine in some matches rather than relying exclusively on a traditional centre-forward. Barcelona have players capable of operating in that role, including Dani Olmo and Anthony Gordon, giving the manager another tactical option while the club works on its recruitment plans.

The move therefore allows Barcelona to address two needs at once. It has brought in a substantial transfer fee and reduced the club’s wage commitments, while also making it easier to comply with the financial restrictions governing their squad registration.

Rather than treating Torres’ departure as a failure to retain an important player, Barcelona see the agreement with Paris Saint-Germain as a deal that delivers both economic and sporting advantages. The additional flexibility could help them reshape the squad and prepare for the new season, with the pursuit of Rodri and the search for attacking reinforcements now central to their plans.
