Barcelona’s Camp Nou moves closer to hosting 2029 Champions League final

Camp Nou has become the leading candidate to stage the 2029 UEFA Champions League final, with the Barcelona stadium currently ahead of Wembley in a closely contested race.

UEFA is understood to favour Camp Nou as the venue for the showpiece match, according to Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo. The decision is expected to be made at a meeting of the UEFA Executive Committee in Thessaloniki, Greece, on 15 September.

Barcelona’s bid is backed by Barcelona City Council, the Government of Catalonia, the Royal Spanish Football Federation and the Spanish government. That broad support has placed the club’s proposal in a strong position as it competes with Wembley for the right to host the European final.

The fact that construction work at Camp Nou is not yet complete is not considered an obstacle by UEFA. The governing body is familiar with the redevelopment project in detail, including plans for the stadium roof to be installed next summer.

The prospect of holding a European final in front of 104,600 supporters is viewed by UEFA as a major attraction. A capacity of that size would provide a striking setting for one of the biggest fixtures in club football and is considered a significant advantage for Barcelona’s bid.

UEFA has increased the frequency of its visits to the construction site as it assesses the progress of the redevelopment. Those inspections are also intended to help clear the way for Camp Nou’s return to the Champions League in December 2025.

The stadium has already hosted the European Cup or Champions League final on two occasions. In 1989, Milan defeated Steaua Bucuresti 4-0 at Camp Nou. Ten years later, Manchester United beat Bayern Munich 2-1 at the same venue in the 1999 final.

The proposed return of major European football to Camp Nou is part of Barcelona’s wider plans for the redeveloped ground. Although the works mean the stadium is not yet fully finished, UEFA’s assessment indicates that its incomplete state does not currently prevent it from being considered for the 2029 final.

Wembley remains the main rival, but the latest assessment reported by Mundo Deportivo puts Barcelona’s stadium in front before the formal decision is taken. The outcome will be determined by the UEFA Executive Committee in September.

Camp Nou’s possible selection would give Barcelona the opportunity to stage the final in a venue with a long history of hosting the biggest matches in European football, while also showcasing the scale of its redevelopment.
