Barcelona Women strengthen title lead with 5-1 win before Arsenal test

Barcelona Women moved four points clear of second-placed Real Madrid after beating Madrid CFF 5-1 in the Spanish Liga F at Johan Cruyff Stadium.

The victory extended Barcelona’s unbeaten league run and came four days before their European meeting with Arsenal at Spotify Camp Nou on Thursday, 12 November 2026.

Pere Romeu used the match to rest several regular starters, rotate his side and give opportunities to younger players. Patri Guijarro, Van Asten and Aitana were absent from the starting line-up, while the Catalan midfielder did not play any part in the game.

Rosalia retained her place after completing the derby, Sydney started at right-back and Aicha partnered Martina Fernandez in central defence.

Before kick-off, both teams paid tribute to Jesus de Miguel. The players walked on to the pitch without the national anthem being played and observed a minute’s silence to Pau Casals’ “El Cant dels Ocells”. Play was stopped again in the ninth minute in his memory.

Barcelona began with clear attacking intent, with Pina testing goalkeeper Belen early on. Madrid CFF attempted to compete through a high press and by trying to match the hosts’ possession, but Barcelona’s control gradually forced the visitors deeper into their own half.

Caroline Graham Hansen repeatedly sought to create openings from the right with deliveries into the area. At the other end, Barcelona limited Madrid CFF’s threat on the counter, with Aicha particularly effective in her duels with Obamba, the visitors’ main attacking outlet.

The hosts took the lead before half-time. Brugts reacted quickest to Hasegawa’s ball inside the penalty area, went past Belen and finished into the net.

Barcelona doubled their advantage soon afterwards. Pina began a flowing team move with an impressive individual run, while Caroline helped develop the attack before Ewa Pajor struck a powerful shot beyond the goalkeeper.

Romeu made three changes at the interval, bringing on Van Asten, Carla Julia and Patri Guijarro for Aicha, Brugts and Caroline Graham Hansen.

The second half also marked a significant personal milestone for Marta Torrejon, who made her 500th official appearance for Barcelona. She became the third player to reach that total for the club, following Melanie Serrano and Alexia Putellas.

Barcelona needed only a short time to add a third goal. Patri Torrejon delivered a precise cross into the six-yard area and Carla Julia converted.

Patri Guijarro then made it 4-0 with a powerful effort from outside the box after Rosalia had laid the ball off. Pina completed the scoring following a pass from Patri Guijarro, who combined with Carla Julia in the build-up.

Madrid CFF scored a late consolation when Alba Ruiz found Konan at the penalty spot, and she finished past the Barcelona goalkeeper.

The result gives Romeu’s side an important boost before hosting Arsenal in the Women’s Champions League on Thursday. Barcelona will then face Logrono in the Spanish Liga F on 15 November 2026.
