Barcelona revisit Azzedine Ounahi option as Girona future remains undecided

Barcelona are considering a move for Girona midfielder Azzedine Ounahi during the current summer transfer window as they assess their options in midfield.

The Moroccan has returned to the Catalan club’s list of potential targets, according to Spanish television programme El Chiringuito. Barcelona are understood to be examining the possibility of signing Ounahi because they need to bring in another midfielder following the injury suffered by Netherlands international Frenkie de Jong.

Ounahi’s situation has attracted attention from a number of clubs this summer. However, the 24-year-old has not yet made a decision about where he will play next season, leaving his future at Girona unresolved.

The midfielder is under contract with Girona until the summer of 2030. His current market value is estimated at 30m euros, a figure that would be relevant as Barcelona consider whether to pursue the player during this transfer window.

Barcelona’s interest in Ounahi is not new. The club previously became linked with the midfielder after his performances for Morocco at the 2022 World Cup, when he emerged as one of the most noticeable players in the Atlas Lions’ successful campaign. A move to Barcelona was discussed at that time, but the proposed transfer did not materialise.

Ounahi again enhanced his reputation on the international stage at the 2026 World Cup. He impressed for Morocco as the team reached the quarter-finals, further increasing interest in his services and placing his future under renewed scrutiny.

His performances for both club and country have now put him among the midfielders being assessed by Barcelona. The Catalan side are looking for a new option in that area after De Jong’s injury, and Ounahi’s previous links with the club have brought the possibility of a move back into focus.

There is no indication that an agreement has been reached, and Ounahi has yet to settle on his next step. With several clubs reportedly monitoring him and Girona holding him to a long-term contract, any move would depend on Barcelona deciding to advance their interest and on the player’s own preference.

For now, the Moroccan remains a Girona player, but his name has once again become associated with Barcelona as the summer market progresses. The club’s need for midfield reinforcements has revived a long-standing connection, while Ounahi’s market value and contract situation are likely to shape any discussions over a possible transfer.
