Barcelona make Azzedine Ounahi priority target after Frenkie de Jong injury
FC Barcelona are reportedly preparing a move for Girona midfielder Azzedine Ounahi this summer, with the Morocco international identified as a possible replacement for the injured Frenkie de Jong.
Spanish outlet El Chiringuito reports that Barcelona are keen to sign Ounahi after making the midfielder a priority in response to De Jong’s expected absence. The Netherlands international sustained an injury during the 2026 World Cup and is not expected to return for several months.
Barcelona previously considered signing Ounahi in the aftermath of the 2022 World Cup, but that move did not materialise. The Catalan club could now have another opportunity to bring the former Marseille player to the Camp Nou, with the midfielder’s performances at Girona having strengthened his reputation.
The potential transfer is understood to be worth up to €10m. Ounahi has not yet made a decision over his future, although Girona’s relegation to the second division could increase the likelihood of him leaving the club during the summer transfer window.
The Morocco international is also attracting interest from Real Betis, meaning Barcelona could face competition for his signature. However, the reported interest from the Spanish giants gives Ounahi another possible route to remain at the highest level of the game despite Girona’s relegation.
Ounahi played an important role for Girona last season, appearing in 24 matches. He contributed directly to eight goals, scoring five times and providing three assists.
His form has made him a significant figure in Girona’s midfield and prompted Barcelona to consider him as cover for De Jong. The Dutchman’s injury has created a need for additional options in the position, while Ounahi’s previous experience in Spanish football would make him a familiar target.
The proposed deal would represent a return to the centre of attention for Ounahi after his performances at the 2022 World Cup led to interest from Barcelona. Although the club did not complete a transfer at that time, it has reportedly retained an interest in the player.
For now, Ounahi’s next move remains undecided. Barcelona are believed to be monitoring the situation, while Real Betis are also competing for the midfielder. Girona’s drop into the second division may prove decisive as the player weighs up whether to remain with the club or accept an offer from one of his interested suitors.
With De Jong unavailable for several months, Barcelona are looking to strengthen their midfield, and Ounahi has emerged as one of the options under consideration.
