Barcelona-linked Kroupi shares hospital update after foot surgery sidelines him for months

Eli Junior Kroupi has confirmed he faces up to four months out after undergoing surgery on a left-foot injury, dealing a major blow to any chance of a summer move to Barcelona.

The 20-year-old Bournemouth forward, viewed by Barcelona as a potential alternative to Julian Alvarez, posted a message from his hospital bed only hours after the operation, which is expected to rule him out until October or November.

According to French newspaper L’Equipe, Barcelona had already seen two bids rejected by Bournemouth, who value Kroupi at up to €100m, before the injury further complicated any prospect of a deal in this transfer window.

Barcelona had been monitoring the France Under-21 international as a contingency option should they fail to land Alvarez, but Kroupi’s enforced lay-off now appears likely to remove him from their immediate plans.

From his hospital room, Kroupi shared a photo alongside his parents on social media and reassured supporters about his condition, writing: “Thank you all for your messages, my family and I are very moved.. the surgery went well, and now I am fully focused on my recovery, see you soon.”

The timing of the injury means Kroupi will miss a significant portion of the new season, reducing his chances of a high-profile transfer before the current window closes and forcing both player and club to recalibrate their short-term expectations.

Breakthrough season at Bournemouth

Kroupi has enjoyed a rapid rise in the Premier League since joining Bournemouth from Lorient last summer, emerging as one of the standout young forwards in England.

In his debut campaign with the club, he made 35 appearances in all competitions and scored 13 goals, playing a central role in Bournemouth’s impressive sixth-place finish in the Premier League and their qualification for the Europa League.

His performances under Andoni Iraola drew widespread attention across Europe, with his pace, movement and finishing making him one of Bournemouth’s key attacking threats.

Iraola has since left the south-coast club to take over at Liverpool, with Marco Rose appointed as his successor at Bournemouth ahead of the new season.

Kroupi’s injury means Rose will be without one of the team’s most influential forwards for the opening months of his tenure, while Barcelona and any other interested clubs will now be forced to wait to reassess the Frenchman’s condition and form once he returns to action.
