Barcelona launch title defence in style with five-goal victory at Elche

Barcelona began their defence of the Spanish league title in emphatic fashion by thrashing hosts Elche 5-0 in a match where Raphinha and several new arrivals made an immediate impression.

Hansi Flick’s side gradually imposed their authority on the game, producing an attacking display that sent an early warning to their rivals. Barcelona started with Adeyemi, Raphinha, Fermin Lopez, Lamine Yamal and Espart in the line-up, and their movement in the final third repeatedly unsettled Elche.

Lamine Yamal was particularly influential in helping Barcelona control the contest. His incisive movement and accurate passes between the lines created problems for the home defence as the visitors established a clear foothold.

Barcelona’s pressure was rewarded in the 14th minute. Fermin Lopez won possession in an advanced position, and the resulting move ended with the visitors being awarded a penalty. Raphinha took responsibility and struck the ball firmly into the net to put the title holders ahead.

Elche attempted to respond but struggled to create a genuine threat in front of goal. Barcelona continued to dictate the tempo, although their progress was briefly disrupted shortly before half-time when Gavi was forced off with an injury in the 44th minute. Pedri came on as his replacement.

The setback did little to reduce Barcelona’s attacking momentum. In added time at the end of the first half, Lamine Yamal and Raphinha combined to construct another fluent attack before finding Adeyemi. The forward controlled the ball and finished with his right foot to score his first competitive goal for Barcelona.

That second goal gave the visitors a 2-0 lead at the interval and left Elche facing a difficult task after struggling to contain Barcelona’s front line.

The hosts came close to reducing the deficit early in the second half when Morente’s effort struck the post. Elche were unable to take advantage of that opportunity, however, and Barcelona soon extended their advantage.

The introduction of Dani Olmo and Anthony Gordon added further attacking threat for the visitors. The pair combined in the build-up to Barcelona’s third goal, supplying Raphinha, who finished in the 67th minute for his second goal of the match.

That strike effectively ended any realistic prospect of an Elche comeback. Barcelona continued to attack, and Gordon soon found himself through on goal. Rather than shoot, he chose to square the ball to Fermin Lopez, who made no mistake from close range in the 71st minute.

Fermin completed Barcelona’s five-goal haul nine minutes from time. After showing excellent control inside the penalty area, he released a powerful shot that put the result beyond doubt and capped a highly productive evening for the midfielder.

The victory gives Barcelona an ideal start to their campaign and provides an early statement to the teams hoping to challenge them for the title. Raphinha was one of the standout performers, while the new arrivals also played a significant role in a result that underlined the champions’ attacking strength.

Barcelona will next host Athletic Club as they look to maintain their perfect start to the season.
