Barcelona held by Real Betis as LALIGA title race remains wide open

FC Barcelona missed the chance to strengthen their position at the top of LALIGA after being held to a 1-1 draw by Real Betis on Saturday night.

Hansi Flick selected the attacking partnership of Ferran Torres and Robert Lewandowski after the pair impressed in last weekend’s victory over Girona. However, Barcelona were unable to turn an early lead into three points as Real Betis recovered to claim a share of the spoils.

The home side made an immediate impact and moved in front after only seven minutes. A swift passing move released Gavi behind the Real Betis defence, and he calmly guided his finish into the bottom corner.

Real Betis responded before long. Antony, who is on loan, produced the decisive work down the flank before delivering a cross into the area. Natan rose to meet it and headed powerfully past the Barcelona defence to restore parity.

Neither side could find a winning goal after the interval. Barcelona and Real Betis therefore had to settle for one point each, a result that leaves the LALIGA title race still open.

Earlier on Saturday, Real Madrid suffered a setback of their own as they were beaten 2-1 by Valencia CF.

Madrid were without the injured Andriy Lunin, so Fran Gonzalez made his first appearance in goal, with Thibaut Courtois named among the substitutes.

Real Madrid had the opportunity to take an early lead when Kylian Mbappe went down inside the penalty area following a challenge by Cesar Tarrega. The referee awarded a penalty, but Vinicius Junior was unable to convert it.

Valencia CF punished that miss just two minutes later. Mouctar Diakhaby climbed above Antonio Rudiger to meet a corner and headed Los Che into the lead.

Real Madrid created opportunities to respond, with Mbappe among those threatening the Valencia CF goal, but they could not find an equaliser before the break. Valencia CF consequently took their advantage into half-time.

Madrid eventually drew level five minutes after the restart. Vinicius Junior met a flick-on from Jude Bellingham and hooked the ball into the roof of the net.

Real Madrid pressed for a second goal, but it was Valencia CF who struck again in the final stages. Rafa Mir charged forward on the right before cutting the ball back, allowing Hugo Duro to head home and secure all three points for the visitors.

The results mean both leading contenders dropped points on the same day, ensuring the battle at the top of LALIGA remains finely poised.
