Barcelona consider Azzedine Ounahi move after Frenkie de Jong injury

Barcelona are considering a move for Girona midfielder Azzedine Ounahi as they assess how to cover for Frenkie de Jong, whose knee injury could keep him out for several months.

Ounahi is among the leading options being discussed by the Catalan club during the current transfer window. His potential availability for about €10m has increased Barcelona’s interest, particularly following Girona’s relegation.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are examining several ways of replacing de Jong while he is sidelined. One possibility is to make a relatively low-cost signing to strengthen their midfield rather than pursue an expensive deal.

The club could also face a greater need in that area if Casado leaves during the transfer window. Barcelona are therefore weighing their options as they attempt to maintain depth in midfield while operating under financial restrictions.

Barcelona are not alone in monitoring Ounahi. Real Betis are also seeking to sign the Morocco international this summer, creating competition for his signature.

Ounahi first attracted widespread attention during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he played a prominent role in Morocco’s run and helped the team eliminate Spain in the last 16. Barcelona were interested in him at the time but did not make a formal offer.

The midfielder subsequently moved to Marseille in January 2023. He is now being considered again by Barcelona, with the club looking for reinforcements that fit within its financial limitations. A decision on whether to pursue the deal is expected in the coming days.

Barcelona announced earlier that de Jong had suffered an injury to his right knee. Medical tests confirmed that the Netherlands midfielder had torn the medial collateral ligament in the joint.

The club did not give a projected recovery period. However, de Jong’s recent injury record has added to concern over his availability, after he missed almost two months last season because of a thigh muscle problem.

If the expected recovery timeline is confirmed, de Jong may not return to action until November. That would rule him out of the beginning of Barcelona’s season and increase the pressure on the club to find midfield cover before the transfer window closes.

Ounahi’s possible arrival would represent a comparatively inexpensive solution to that problem, with Barcelona balancing their need for an immediate replacement against the financial constraints affecting their recruitment. The club’s interest remains under consideration, while Real Betis continue to pursue the player.
