Barcelona assess Piero Hincapie as Deco searches for January defensive solution

Barcelona are considering a move for Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie as the club continues its search for a central defender ahead of the January transfer window.

The Catalan club’s sporting department, led by Deco, is examining a number of options to strengthen the squad and maintain its challenge across all competitions. Hincapie, 24, has emerged as one of the players under consideration after struggling to secure the expected playing time at Arsenal this season.

According to the Catalan newspaper Sport, the Ecuador international’s reduced role has been influenced by physical problems and strong competition for places in Arsenal’s defence. Hincapie joined the London club from Bayer Leverkusen but has found it difficult to establish regular continuity in Mikel Arteta’s plans.

He is not currently regarded as one of Arteta’s preferred choices, although Barcelona believe the player’s profile would suit their requirements. Hincapie is left-footed, has international experience and can operate both as a central defender and at left-back.

That versatility is particularly valued by Barcelona manager Hansi Flick, who sees the player’s ability to cover two defensive positions as a potential way to increase his options during what is expected to be a demanding second half of the season.

Deco and Flick have received highly positive reports on Hincapie, leading Barcelona’s sporting director to make initial contact with the player’s representatives. Those discussions were intended to establish whether Hincapie would be open to changing clubs and to explore the possibility of a move during the winter transfer window.

However, any deal would be difficult to complete. Although Arteta is not currently relying on Hincapie as a regular starter, the Arsenal manager is strongly reluctant to lose players in January.

Arteta is aware that Arsenal still have a large number of matches to play and does not want to reduce his squad options while the club competes on several fronts. That stance could make negotiations complicated even if Barcelona decide to pursue the Ecuadorian more actively.

For now, Barcelona’s interest in Hincapie remains exploratory and forms part of Deco’s wider work to identify defensive reinforcements. Sky has also reported that the club has made an enquiry about Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni, who remains on the sporting department’s list of targets.

The approaches for Hincapie and Bastoni underline Barcelona’s intention to assess the central-defender market before making a final decision. Deco’s evaluation will be shaped by Flick’s sporting requirements as well as the club’s financial constraints, with January taking on increasing importance in Barcelona’s planning.
