Ballard’s extraordinary finish steals the show in Bristol City’s 2-2 draw
Dom Ballard scored an extraordinary late goal for Bristol City in their 2-2 draw with Birmingham City on Saturday, producing a remarkable first strike for his new club and giving supporters a moment to remember despite the hosts surrendering victory in stoppage time.
The 21-year-old forward struck in the 85th minute after Rio Cardenes delivered a cross into the penalty area. With his back to goal, Ballard connected with the ball using an inventive backheel touch before following up with a powerful shot which flew into the top corner of James Beadle’s goal.
The finish sparked celebrations among the Bristol City supporters and immediately became the defining moment of an entertaining match. Ballard’s improvisation and accuracy turned a difficult cross into one of the most eye-catching goals of the round in the English Championship.

The goal was Ballard’s first for Bristol City since he joined the club at the beginning of August from Leyton Orient. It also appeared to have put his side on course for their first win of the season.
Bristol City had begun their campaign with a 2-0 defeat by Millwall in the opening round, making Ballard’s late intervention seem even more significant as the team looked to respond with three points.
However, Birmingham City ensured that the home side’s celebrations would be short-lived. In the fourth minute of added time, Birmingham were awarded a penalty, and Demarai Gray converted from the spot to restore parity.
That late equaliser meant the match finished 2-2, with both teams taking a point. Bristol City were left to reflect on a result that had promised to be a first victory of the season before Birmingham’s decisive response in the closing moments.
Even so, the draw could not overshadow Ballard’s contribution. His goal provided Bristol City with the standout image of the afternoon and marked the beginning of his time at the club in spectacular fashion.
Having arrived from Leyton Orient at the start of August, Ballard had been waiting for his first Bristol City goal. When the opportunity came, he produced a finish of unusual quality: a controlled backheel while facing away from goal, followed by a strike that found the upper corner beyond Beadle.
The result denied Bristol City the win they had appeared likely to secure, but Ballard’s goal is likely to remain in the memory of the club’s supporters for considerably longer. It was regarded as one of the finest goals of the round and perhaps one of the most remarkable scored in the English Championship so far this season.
