World Cup 2026: Cédric Bakambu vows DRC will honour a nation’s expectations on return to football’s biggest stage
The Democratic Republic of Congo have arrived in Houston for the 2026 World Cup, with captain Cédric Bakambu promising the Leopards will do everything possible to represent their country with pride during their long-awaited return to the tournament.
The Central African nation is preparing for only its second appearance at a World Cup and its first since 1974, ending a wait of 52 years to compete again on football’s biggest stage.
DR Congo secured their place in the tournament through the intercontinental play-offs, overcoming Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz to book their ticket to the finals.
Now, the Leopards are aiming to create a new chapter in the country’s football history as they prepare for the challenge ahead in the United States.
While many supporters will be following events from home after being unable to make the journey to North America, the players have spoken of their determination to carry the hopes of millions of Congolese fans throughout the competition.
Bakambu, one of the squad’s most experienced players, used social media to reflect on the significance of the occasion and the responsibility that comes with representing the nation at the World Cup.
“ It is a tremendous source of pride to represent our country on the biggest stage in world football. We know where we come from, we know the expectations of an entire nation, and we will give everything to defend our colors with honor, passion, and determination. I also want to thank each and every one of you for your support, your messages, and your affection. Your strength accompanies us every day and motivates us to surpass ourselves,” said Cédric Bakambu on social media.
The team has established its base in Houston as preparations intensify ahead of the opening match.
The Congolese delegation is staying at the Omni Houston Hotel, a five-star complex featuring 378 rooms and suites as well as fitness facilities designed to support athletes during major competitions.
For training sessions, the coaching staff have selected SaberCats Stadium, a venue regularly used by a local rugby union side.
With a capacity of 4,000 spectators, the facility has been prepared to provide the Leopards with suitable conditions as they fine-tune their preparations.
The proximity of the two locations is expected to help streamline the team’s schedule, with the hotel and training ground situated around 20 minutes apart by road.
Attention is now turning to the opening fixture of the tournament, where DR Congo will face Portugal on Wednesday, 17 June.
The match will also pit the Leopards against Cristiano Ronaldo, who is set to lead the Portuguese challenge.
For a nation returning to the World Cup after more than half a century, the occasion carries enormous significance.
Bakambu’s message underlined the sense of responsibility within the squad, with players fully aware of the expectations resting on their shoulders.
As the countdown to kick-off continues, the Leopards are focused on making a positive start and delivering a performance worthy of the supporters backing them from home and around the world.
