Azam FC move to block Florent Ibenge’s move despite reaching agreement with Mali FA

Tanzanian club Azam FC have moved swiftly to reaffirm their commitment to head coach Florent Ibenge amid growing interest from the Mali national team, setting up a developing tug-of-war over the experienced tactician’s future.

The club is understood to be determined to keep Florent Ibenge at the helm despite agreeing to a deal with the Eagles, viewing him as central to a long-term project aimed at reshaping both the squad and the club’s competitive ambitions.

Internal plans are already underway to strengthen the team with players identified by the coach himself, signalling strong backing from the Azam hierarchy.

Since his arrival, Ibenge has been positioned as a key figure in Azam’s technical and structural development, with the club keen to maintain stability as they push for domestic dominance and stronger continental performances.

However, uncertainty looms as the Mali Football Federation is reportedly preparing to appoint Ibenge as their next head coach following the exit of Tom Saintfeit.

The Malian side is actively seeking an experienced manager capable of leading a new competitive cycle, and Ibenge’s profile has made him a leading candidate for the role.

The situation has created a delicate standoff, with Azam FC reluctant to lose a coach they consider vital, while Mali’s football authorities are pushing ahead with plans to secure his services.

No official decision has been announced, but the growing interest from Mali has placed Ibenge at the centre of one of the most significant coaching uncertainties in African football at present.
